What does the speed test do?

It measures three key metrics: ping (latency in ms), download (Mbps) and upload (Mbps). It also shows your provider, public IP and connection type so you have a complete picture of the network.

Each phase opens 4 parallel HTTP connections to saturate the link, like Speedtest.net does. The first 2 seconds are discarded (TCP slow-start warm-up) and the speed is computed only from the next 10 seconds — bytes ÷ time, in Mbps.

Is the measurement accurate?

Yes — using parallel connections and a steady-state window the measurement gets close to a real Speedtest. There's still some natural variation (5–15%) due to TCP/HTTP overhead, network jitter and the location of our server.

Is there a server near me?

ToolboxHub uses a single server, so latency depends on your region. The result reflects HTTP performance against that endpoint, which is usually a good proxy for everyday speed (streaming, downloads, video calls).

Why does each phase last about 12 seconds?

It's the time needed for TCP to leave slow-start (~2 s warm-up) and for us to gather a stable measurement window (~10 s). Less than that and the result reflects the warm-up; more than that and the test gets unnecessarily long.

Where do the provider and location data come from?

Provider, ASN, IP and location come from a public IP database (ipapi.co) when accessed from our server. The 'network type' (Wi-Fi, mobile, etc.) comes from the browser's NetworkInformation API, available mainly in Chromium-based browsers and on mobile.

Is the ping the same as in a game?

Not exactly. We measure HTTP latency to the ToolboxHub server, which is similar to but not identical to game ping (which uses UDP and dedicated servers). Still, it's a reliable indicator of overall network responsiveness.
